Search for heat transfer labels in India and most of what comes back is garment transfers — iron-on labels, tagless neck transfers, printed badges for clothing. That is a real industry, and it has nothing to do with decorating a shampoo bottle or a paint pail.
A garment transfer is pressed onto fabric with a heat press, usually by hand, in small batches. An industrial heat transfer label is applied to a moulded container on a roller or platen applicator, in line, at production speed.
There is also a third thing often confused with both: thermal transfer printing, which uses a ribbon in a desktop printer to print barcodes onto self-adhesive stock. Different product, different machine, different purpose.
It is a multi-layer film on a carrier web. From the top: the carrier, a release layer, a protective lacquer, the printed ink layers, and a heat-activated adhesive. Heat applied from the carrier side softens the release layer and activates the adhesive. The printed layer transfers onto the container and the carrier peels away.
The protective lacquer ends up on the outside. That is what stops the print scuffing during filling, capping and transit — and it is the layer most people do not know is there.
A heat transfer applicator — roller or platen, semi-automatic or fully automatic depending on volume. If you do not have one yet, say so when you enquire; the film construction depends on the machine.
And tell the supplier your exact resin. The adhesive is matched to the substrate, and a grade made for PP will not behave the same on PET.
